Married record-holding free divers Christina & Eusebio Saenz de Santamaria explore dive as deeply as one breath will take them. On this excursion, with their Nikon D7000, some natural light, they created these stunning images in the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico.

These delightful underwater photos by Elena Kalis are inspired by Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Kalis dove into underwater photography some five years ago preferring underwater photography for it's dream like, and other worldly, quality. This is an ongoing, "unfinished", project that features her daughter as the main character.
Photographer and Research Scientist at Scripps Institution Octavio Aburto has captured these absolutely stunning and fascinating images from La Reserva Marina de Cabo Pulmo, Mexico, of fish swirling together in these massive tornado like structures.

Hawaii-based photographer Joshua Lambus has created this collection entitled Blackwater.
Lambus explains:
"Now being underwater I'm inundated with stories, struggles, triumphs. Seeing our fragile ecosystem inch ever closer to the verge of destruction pushes me to continue my work, not only for artistic value, but for a far greater purpose. I hope to tell a story and ask for help for those without a voice."

Seems a bit counter intuitive to me, but these black and white underwater photos from Indonesian photographer Hengki Koentjoro seem even more vibrant and dynamic than so much underwater photography I've seen. There is a sense of moment, presence and space that often gets obscured by the saturated tones in full color photography. Or maybe it's just this photographer's eye.
I never get tired, especially as summer approaches, of these under wave photos. Here is a great set from Mark Tipple.
Semenov says about his underwater photography:
When I first began to experiment with sea life photography I tried shooting small invertebrates for fun with my own old DSLR camera and without any professional lights or lenses. I collected the invertebrates under water and then I’ve shot them in the lab. After two or three months of failure after failure I ended up with a few good pictures, which I’ve showed to the crew. It has inspired us to buy a semi-professional camera complete with underwater housing and strobes. Thus I’ve spent the following field season trying to shoot the same creatures, but this time in their environment. It was much more difficult, and I spent another two months without any significant results. But when you’re working at something every day, you inevitably get a lot of experience. Eventually I began to get interesting photos — one or two from each dive. Now after four years of practice I get a few good shots almost every time I dive but I still have a lot of things that need to be mastered in underwater photography.

What a fantastic answer to the mystery of these underwater 'crop circles' found off the coast of Japan. The whole story is over at Spoon and Tamago.
"While diving in the semi-tropical region of Amami Oshima, roughly 80 ft below sea level, Ookata spotted something he had never seen. And as it turned out, no one else had seen it before either."
It turnes out these mysterious and organic shapes are the work of a small little pufferfish and is probably a mating ritual. And in fact it seems it is a sort of nest building, the mounds and ridges are meant to protect eggs from currents.
We've seen amazing photos of jellyfish before (Jan 18, 2012) and seeing these new shots today makes it perfectly clear how astounding and eery they truly are. Here is just a small sampling of Alexander Semenov's Underwater gallery on flickr.
