Reflecting on the memories of the golden age of Hollywood, it gives the feeling that there is no such place like a movie theater to celebrate the birth of film from an artist. "The greatest emotion I have ever had in my life took place in the dark" and not in front of a smartphone or television. I have decided to spotlight the grandiose movie palaces to the independent movie houses. This is Cinema.
Sure the looming Earth in the background of Gravity was CGI, and of course the tiger in Life of Pi, but there is so much these days that exists purely through the magic of CGI.

In an effort to highlight the wildness of these mountain places and how they have inspired explorers of the past, present and future, time-lapse sequences were patiently gathered from exposed summits, by glacial lakes, and under aurora-filled skies. Hours and even months of change lapses in a matter of seconds, providing the viewer with a rare insight into the ever-changing nature of the landscape. Weaving throughout the film are reflections of an early mountaineer, who is deeply moved by his own encounter with the mountains and the revelations of explorers who have come before him. “What is this power that lures me upwards, into the unknown,” he wonders, “that pulls me deeper, despite snow, wind and exhaustion?” Made on a shoestring budget and with entirely volunteer hours, the film brought together artists from two vastly different parts of North America - Banff, Alberta, and Atlanta, Georgia. Strangers at the start, the film team developed strong friendships over the course of production and were united by their common goal of capturing the beauty and essence of a place that inspires them every day. This 100% human-powered film combines advanced time-lapse photography with an original story and musical score to bring the landscape center-stage and offers a thrilling new perspective that re-establishes the Canadian Rockies among the finest mountains in the world. From kogonada:
"The films of Ozu are filled with people walking through alleys and hallways: the in-between spaces of modern life. This is where Ozu resides. In the transitory. It’s what he values as a filmmaker. Alleys are not an opportunity for suspense but for passage.
*Passageways is made up of Ozu’s final six films: Equinox Flower (Higanbana), Good Morning (Ohayo), Floating Weeds (Ukigusa), Late Autumn (Akibiyori), The End of Summer (Kohayagawa-ke no aki), and An Autumn Afternoon (Sanma no aji)"

SAMSARA is in theaters now in the USA, UK, Germany, Canada, and more. FULL THEATER INFO HERE: http://www.barakasamsara.com/theaters ABOUT SAMSARA: Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience. SAMSARA reunites director Ron Fricke and producer Mark Magidson, whose award-winning films BARAKA and CHRONOS were acclaimed for combining visual and musical artistry. SAMSARA is a Sanskrit word that means “the ever turning wheel of life” and is the point of departure for the filmmakers as they search for the elusive current of interconnection that runs through our lives. Filmed over a period of almost five years and in twenty-five countries, SAMSARA transports us to sacred grounds, disaster zones, industrial sites, and natural wonders. By dispensing with dialogue and descriptive text, SAMSARA subverts our expectations of a traditional documentary, instead encouraging our own inner interpretations inspired by images and music that infuses the ancient with the modern. Expanding on the themes they developed in BARAKA (1992) and CHRONOS (1985), SAMSARA explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience. Neither a traditional documentary nor a travelogue, SAMSARA takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation. Through powerful images, the film illuminates the links between humanity and the rest of nature, showing how our life cycle mirrors the rhythm of the planet.
Director and cinematographer Ron Ficke (Koyaanisqatsi, Baraka) has been hard at work on Samsara for 5 years. The entire film is shot in stunning 70mm. It is a film that relies completely on its visual impact and cinematographic juxtaposition, as there isn't any dialogue.

Vimeo user, Kogonada, who also made Tarantino: From Below and Wes Anderson: From Below, raises the supercut to be a visual essay, a way of reasoning and processing using comparison and visual analysis. And such a cool set of shots he's collected here from the oeuvre of Stanley Kubrick.
Flavorwire and Flavorpill have made this little video essay:
Some of my favorites include Wong Kar-Wei's In the Mood For Love, The Tree of Life (cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki) and Hitchcock's Vertigo.
Putting stunning sequences near each other creates a visual narrative, an essay that uses vision, motion, color and light as its sentences, nouns, verbs and phrases. The trailer (below) has be pretty excited for the theatrical release.
Samsara is the Sanskrit word for "continuous flow" but often refers to the never ending cycle of life-death-rebirth, physical and figurative, so often thought through in Hinduism and Buddhism.
SAMSARA will be in theaters across the USA August 24th. For full theater and international release dates visit http://www.barakasamsara.com/theaters ABOUT SAMSARA: Prepare yourself for an unparalleled sensory experience.
